Priority in life: fulfilling her purpose in all areas
In View
Patricia Massey
Keeping an open mind about net-working has lead Patricia Massey down some interesting paths. When someone mentioned a new mentoring program, for example, she jumped. That led Massey's Myca Group & Associates to become the first to participate in the Athena PowerLink program. It's aimed at women-owned businesses and hosted by the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber's WE Link Program.
Massey gained much from the experience, including an appreciation for balancing networking with needs of business and personal life.
Why do you have the career you have?
With a background in marketing and advertising, creating engaging and
innovative e-learning programs is a great fit. I'm fascinated with the
power of technology and leveraging it to make learning more memorable,
engaging and effective with sustainable results.
What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
With the rapidly changing technology landscape, it is difficult to merge
new concepts and approaches into tools that are appropriate for corporate
environments. We're always eager to apply the "latest and greatest."But
some organizations do not have the system capacity to handle the new
media techniques.
What advice would you give a new boss?
Delegate and don't micromanage. It's hard to give up control when you
are accountable, but trust your instincts and give people the benefit
of the doubt. At the same time, be prepared to step in quickly if you
see that projects are off-track and don't let a small issue turn into
a major disaster because you are "empowering" people.
What is your definition of a miserable, unsatisfying life?
Working at a J-O-B that you don't enjoy and just waiting for the time
when you can quit. I love what I do, and it shows through in all aspects
of my life.
'You've just been given $100,000 to donate to charity. Which
and Why?
I'd give half to City Cure because of all of the great work they do
in Cincinnati's inner city with our youth, and the other half to Christian
Rodders & Racers Association. CRA is an international motorsports
minis- try that holds chapel services at car shows across the country
and reaches people who wouldn't go to a traditional church.
What is the best book you ever read?
"My Sister's Keeper," by Jodi Picoult. I like to read for
fun and am intrigued with the moral dilemmas covered in most of Jodi
Picoult's novels.
What music are you listening to right now?
Praise & worship, oldies and the "AEIOU" song in my car
when I'm driving with my 5-year old granddaughter (over and over and
over again).
How do you most like to spend money?
I have three priorities. Philanthropy - I support my local church and
other ministries that share my vision. Travel and my grandkids round
out the discretionary spending.
What scares you?
Besides the economy?! Not fulfilling my purpose and leaving Earth before
I'm done.
